The Columbia Highlands: Exploring Washington’s Last Frontier
Thursday, October 11th, 2007 7 pm
Free presentation at the Seattle REI Flagship Store

Join Conservation Northwest, in exploring a special but undiscovered part of Washington State. East of the Cascades, you’ll find the Kettle and Selkirk Mountains - a beautiful but largely undiscovered corner of Washington State still home to grizzly bears, wolves, moose, lynx and bighorn sheep. Join outdoor writer Craig Romano, wildlife photographer Paul Bannick, and long-time wilderness advocate Tim Coleman as they share stories and images of the rugged wilderness and communities of this region and explore the area’s importance as a wildlife bridge between the Cascades and the Rockies.

The Columbia Highlands, straddles both sides of the Upper Columbia River in northeast Washington and has an incredible richness of wildlife: State wildlife officials just recently documented gray wolves returning to the area; Canada lynx inhabit the region’s 7,000 ft Kettle and Selkirk Mountains; Grizzly bears still roam the Salmo-Priest Wilderness, as do caribou; Moose, elk, deer, mountain goats, and bighorn sheep can all be seen grazing the hillsides; and the region is a very important stopover for migratory birds traveling along the Pacific Flyway. It is the only place in Washington that is still home to the full suite of animals that were here when Lewis and Clark came through our state over 100 years ago.

This event will feature a multimedia presentation drawing on the outstanding photography from the beautiful new coffee table book, Columbia Highlands: Exploring Washington’s Last Frontier, co-published by Mountaineers Books and Conservation Northwest and written by noted outdoor writer Craig Romano. Join us in exploring the Columbia Highlands; the people, wildlife and local collaborative efforts in protecting “Washington’s Last Frontier”.

This event is sponsored by Conservation Northwest, REI, Mountaineers Books, Washington Wilderness Coalition, National Wildlife Federation, Sierra Club, Seattle Mountaineers, The Wilderness Society, Seattle Audubon, Audubon Washington, Washington Trails Association, Outdoors NW magazine, KBCS 91.3, and KPLU 88.5
