Mumming is an historic activity. At one time hundreds if not thousands of villages and towns throughout Britain performed something similar around Christmas time. The plays relate the story of good against evil.
Copies of at least four versions of the play still exist here in the Forest alone, each one different from the next. The Forest of Dean Morris Men, have chosen to enact the Newnham edition, where Saint George encounters the Turkish Knight.
