Song and Science Combine in "Brain Chemistry for Lovers" November 15, 2008

On Saturday, Nov. 15, vocalist Valerie Day, pianist Darrell Grant and a small ensemble of other local jazz musicians will perform a unique blend of cabaret, concert andscience lecture?? The Brain Chemistry for Lovers Preview Show begins at 8:00 p.m. at Wilfs Restaurant and Bar in historic Union Station (800 NW 6th and Irving, 503.223.0070). Admission is $10 and all ages are welcome. Reservations are recommended.

Conceived of by Day, Brain Chemistry for Lovers considers the stages of romantic relationships (lust, attraction, attachment, rejection) and connects them to the brain chemicals occurring during each stage (e.g., Dopamine, Seratonin, Oxytocyn). The result is a combination of popular American song, amusing and enlightening scripting and arresting on-screen visuals by lauded Portland-based filmmaker Jim Blashfield.

The Nov. 15 performance provides a scaled-down sneak peek of a full, multi-media Valentines Day production coming to Portland on Feb.16, 2009 at the Newmark Theater. The show will be featured as part of the Portland Chamber Orchestras 2008/2009 season and as a highlight of Oregon Health Sciences Universitys Brain Awareness Week. The production will also run on Feb. 14 at the Liberty Theater in Astoria.

Day is an accomplished vocalist on the Pacific Northwest jazz scene. She first made her mark on pop culture by fronting Portland-based NU SHOOZ, known for its hit single I Cant Wait, which helped score a Gold record and a Grammy nomination in 1986. Newly reincarnated as the NU SHOOZ Orchestra, the band plans to unveil its new spy-noir meets funk sound with its first full-length release in 2009.

Darrel Grant is well known to the jazz world for his critically-acclaimed CD releases. He is also an esteemed composer and founded of the Leroy Vinegar Jazz Institute at Portland State University, where he is also a music professor.
